Who We Are

Our expertise covers a wide range of areas, including hydropower impact assessments and research (particularly the interaction between fish and hydroturbines); fish pass design, fabrication and installation; eel pass design, fabrication and installation; evaluations of barriers to migration and the migration patterns of fish within rivers; fisheries impact assessments and ecological surveys.

Pete Kibel BSc. MSc. MIFM

Pete did a first degree at Oxford University and a Masters in Fish Biology at Plymouth. He has worked for over 20 years in fisheries in the UK, Australia, Southern Africa and India. He runs the fisheries science and technology side of Fishtek, including involvement in hydropower assessments, fisheries monitoring and fish pass design.

Toby Coe BSc. MSc. PhD. MIFM

Toby completed his first degree in Biology at Oxford University, a Masters at Kings College in Aquatic Resource Management and his PhD at Exeter University. He is currently the technical specialist in the team and oversees the work in freshwater ecology, statistical modelling, fisheries monitoring and fish pass design. He has published numerous scientific papers and writes regular articles for various fishing magazines, both in the UK and abroad.

Adam Fryer BSc. MSc.

Adam studied Marine Biology and Fisheries Science at Plymouth University before undertaking postgraduate research on Salmonids. He is Fishtek's ecologist and undertakes environmental impact assessments and ecological surveys as well being involved with fish pass design.

Jay Rana BEng. ICE member.

Jay graduated in Civil Engineering at the University of Glasgow and is the in-house engineer at Fishtek. He is responsible for all the engineering calculations and design within projects with a particular emphasis on fish pass design.

Mike Lakin BSc (Hons) CEng MICE MIStructE

Mike is an experienced Chartered Engineer with full corporate membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers and the Institution of Structural Engineers.

He graduated from the University of Salford with a first class honours degree in Civil Engineering in 1988.

His portfolio of projects notably include dams, weirs, pumping stations, culverts, fish passes, sea walls and a variety of building structures spanning a 27-year career in design & project management of capital works.

Mike has previously worked for the National Rivers Authority, Halcrow (an EA framework consultant) and latterly Weymouth & West Dorset District Councils.

Iain Stewart-Russon BSc (hons) MSc, PhD, MIFM, CEnv

Iain is a chartered (C.Env.) fisheries scientist. He undertook his first degree at Aberystwyth in Marine and Freshwater Biology, then a masters in Applied Marine Science at Plymouth. After spending three years working in the Netherlands / Norway studying the stress response of fish to parasites, he obtained a PhD from Southampton University concerning the response of fish to barriers to migration and screens.

Since completing his PhD in 2011 Iain has been working at specialist fisheries engineering and aquatic science consultancies. In addition to his experience in fish passage options appraisal and design, he brings knowledge of screening assessments to protect fish at water offtakes.

Martin Giblin MEng (Hons) GMICE

Martin studied a Masters degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Exeter. After graduation Martin worked predominantly in the rail sector for the consultancy Tony Gee and Partners. Martin is now responsible for the design of fish passes within Fishtek, whilst pursuing chartership with the Institute of Civil Engineers.

Gary Bilotta BSc PhD

Gary completed his first degree in Physical Geography at the University of Sheffield. He then completed his PhD at the University of Exeter. He has published numerous scientific papers including those relating to his research on hydropower, geomorphology, biomonitoring, and fish migration. Gary is a Senior Fisheries Scientist at Fishtek Consulting.

Hannah Rogers CIMA Dip MA

Hannah completed the AAT qualification in accountancy back in 2013, and continued with studies to become part CIMA qualified. For the last 10 years she has worked predominantly in office, accounts and bookkeeping roles, including Accounts Supervising and Management Accounting. Hannah is the Office Manager at Fishtek.

Lucinda Yates BSc AATQB

Lucinda has a BSc in Sport and Exercise from Plymouth and AAT qualifications in accountancy. She has worked previously in a diverse range of roles in office management, project management and book-keeping predominantly for the not-for-profit and charity sectors. Lucinda is the officer manager at Fishtek's Dartington premises

Ben Kibel Mech. Engineering.

Ben has 20 years of experience in a range of environmental engineering projects, including hydro power, wind turbines and fisheries mitigation. He is our consultant engineer and assists with technical fish pass design, electronics and CAD.

Fred Pedersen

Fred is our in-house CAD technician, as well as providing technical support for our website.

John Pedersen BSc

John is the senior CAD technician within the team, responsible for overseeing the production of CAD drawings. He also project manages most of our fish and eel pass fabrications.
